Grown by our family-owned nursery located in Oviedo, FL
This is an original sport of the Brasil Philodendron that our greenhouse has named "Rio" after the city in Brazil. It has stayed consistent in it's variegation patterns and color for several years now. Bright silver and white center stripe instead of the traditional lighter green or yellow pattern on the traditional Brasil Philly.

One of the most variable genera of houseplants on the market, Philodendrons can come in many shapes, sizes, forms & colors! Most Philodendrons are either vining or mounding types, & many Philodendrons will change their leaf shape as they mature!
~Do Not place in full sun. Though many Philodendron can be acclimated to full sun, our Philodendron have been grown under shaded, greenhouse conditions.
~Philodendron are considerably hardy & tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, but for the best growth it is recommended to provide higher levels of humidity.
~If trying to get Philodendron to mature, give them a moss pole or wood board to climb! Make sure to keep the pole or board saturated though so aerial roots can attach & actually climb!
My sweet Rio arrived safely and is so healthy and beautiful 😍. Loved the updating emails as my package traveled to me. I recieved an adorable plant and was able to support a family business, so it was a win-win for me, and I will be purchasing more plants in the future! Thank you for a great experience!
Stunning plant! She came in two days earlier than stated which was a very pleasant, unexpected surprise. Packaging was amazing! They took a lot of care in packing her to ensure safe travels. She’s already starting to grow new leaves :)
I am literally at a loss for words! She is absolutely gorgeous! She is doing excellent and enjoying her new life! She has recently been repotted and enjoying her new Moss pole. Thank you again for providing such great plants and service!
My Rio was packaged well and arrived fairly quickly. I had never ordered a plant through the mail before and this was a great experience. Rio was bigger and more beautiful than I expected it to be. I got it a year ago and you can see from the pictures how much it's grown and I've even pruned it back once. It's an easy keeper. Don't hesitate to snag one. Gabriella rocks!
All around great experience and very happy with my happy, hearty plant! Packaged extremely well and with such care *shout out to Caroline who prepared my plant for its journey* many new leaves sprouting already!
I had been wanting this beauty for a few years and finally believed I could keep it alive through the winter. So I decided to splurge and get it as a birthday gift to myself back in November and was overjoyed on its arrival. This Rio is doing very well and recently added a bamboo stick for one of the vines to climb.
Gorgeous full plant! Bigger than expected and just insane variegation. So glad I took the plunge on this, even though the price tag did give me pause. It's an instant favorite!
I live in Michigan, ordered this then naturally the weather turned colder. I ordered a total of 4 plants and the winter protection. This plant arrived with only one leaf having a small minor tear. It was cold to the touch, was a bit droopy but within a few days perked up nicely. Has a beautiful new leaf after 10 days. It is beautiful! All the new plants look healthy. I had a question about one of the plants, sent email and received an answer promptly. I will order again from Gabriella again.
Thanks
Second plant purchase from Gabriella plants! They did an excellent job wrapping the plant and it delivered very safely. The colors on this plant exceeded expectations!
I ordered 6 plants in the middle of a Utah Snow storm . Staff was incredibly wonderful with communication and in answering all the questions that I had. They also kept an eye on the storm and waited to ship at the perfect time.
All plants arrived phenomenally packaged and thriving.
In LOVE with this Rio that I was lucky enough to get on a ghost update. So full with such beautiful leaves. Another perfect plant from my favorite place!
Beautiful!! As always, the quality and fullness of this Rio is amazing. The package was in the mail for 7 days and everything came in looking as if I picked them up from the greenhouse myself. Thank you Gabs team for always delivering on quality and care!
I can't rave enough about this plant. Pictures don't do it justice. Every leaf is a work of art and she arrived so happy and healthy. I've had her for a few weeks already and she's been doing great.
Super full pot of gorgeous Rio! I’m so happy that I’ve finally found some true Rio. I have another pot that was sold to me by another seller as “Rio” but it’s in fact silver stripe. Similar as they appear to be in pictures, they are clearly different if you own both. I highly recommend getting one if you don’t already own one. It’s worth the hype and the wait. Also, my Rio arrived super healthy with multiple growth points. Can’t wait to have it trail!
Philodendron 'Rio' is a unique cultivar to us and it has been selectively cultivated at our family greenhouses for over a decade.
Unique Characteristics
Rio is unique being the only cultivar with silver as the center most color. It has been consistent on this pattern for over a decade now at our greenhouses.
Parentage History
'Rio' was a naturally occurring sport originating from a Philodendron Brasil. Our selectively propagated cultivar was named "Rio" after the city in Brazil. (Super original, we know...)
Consistent Releases
Right now, we experience 100x+ more demand than the number of plants we can grow each month. This can make it hard to successfully purchase one, but we are regularly releasing batches several times a month and will continue to keep growing more!
GROWER TIPS FROM OUR SEASONED GREENHOUSE PROFESSIONALS
Care Tips for 'Rio'
Moderate to bright indirect light, no direct sun.
Moderate watering
Let soil dry to 25% moist before watering.
They prefer their temperatures to range from 55°F to 90°F
These are vining philodendron by nature, but you can trim this plant to keep the shape or length that you desire as well as use a totem to enable the plant to climb vertically.
We include a 6 mo. time released fertilizer at time of planting, either in the soil or on top of the soil, so your plant should be good to go on nutrients for up to 3-4 months when you receive it.
W/ high humidity, these will form aerial roots at each node and if given a textured surface to attach to, will climb and undergo ontogenesis AKA leaf maturation. With proper conditions and ample time, leaves can reach over 1ft long!
History of Philodendron 'Rio'
The species of Philodendron philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium (incorrectly referred to P.cordatum) has been one of the most common house plants on the market for decades.
They can come in several different colors/patterns & can be quite impressive when left to trail over a pot. They are often referred to as the Heart Shaped Philodendron, and it’s easy to see why.
Within this species, there are currently several highly sought after sports/cultivars.
Our family business has been around for 3 generations, but our main greenhouse is over 2 decades old. Because we self-produce the cuttings needed, we have lots of plants that haven’t seen new “blood” in a long time in the greenhouses, which has led to some pretty cool long term mutations.
From these mutations, we’ve carefully and selectively cultivated particular plants to form 2 unique variegated hederaceum plants of our own.
Both Rio and Gabby originated from Gabriella Plants (formally Gabriella Growers) and we have documentation of both sports in cultivation since as early as 2009.
We are committed to providing an accessible experience for all customers.
