Meet Philodendron hederaceum ‘Mutant Rio’.
Philodendron ‘Mutant Rio’ is a new Gabriella Plants Original cultivar grown from a naturally occurring mutation of our Philodendron hederaceum ‘Rio’.
Mutant Rio produces smaller, more rounded leaves with significantly more cream than green, while still holding onto one of Rio’s most recognizable traits—the silver variegation that appears as its innermost color.
Its growth and heavy cream variegation can make it look closer to another Gabriella Plants Original, Philodendron ‘Gabby’, but Mutant Rio has silver as the innermost color, and a different lineage: it came directly from our Rio stock and has taken us years to propagate to the point where we can finally share it.
The Story of Mutant Rio
The story actually starts with the original Rio.
Philodendron hederaceum ‘Rio’ was discovered and selectively cultivated right here in our greenhouses by Grant Maloy, Shane’s dad, and has been a Gabriella Plants Original for 16+ years.
Years later, Shane Maloy (3rd Generation Owner of Gabriella Plants) noticed an unusual stem growing from one of our Rio plants. It looked different enough that we decided to save it and see what it would do.
Finding a mutation like this is the easy part. Turning one stem into a cultivar we can actually share takes years. We propagate it, grow those plants out, make sure the mutation continues, and then propagate them again. And again.
That’s what we’ve been doing with Mutant Rio for years.
There’s something pretty special about this one for our family. Rio started with Grant, and years later, Shane found something new growing from that same cultivar. Now, after years of growing it, that single mutation has become a cultivar of its own.
We know we won't have enough to meet demand initially. It takes a long time to turn one stem into enough plants to go around.
