Huernia zebrina "Life Saver" is a succulent with a low growing, creeping growth habit. The fleshy, thick stems are prominently angled and strongly toothed. Commonly referred to as "Life Saver" for its odd blooms, has a raised, glossy, wine-red annulus shaped like a life buoy or life saver around the mouth of the corolla tube, the corolla lobes are greenish yellow with red to purple stripes. Easy to grow and flower. Water sparingly. The flowers emit a strong odor similar to that of carrion to attract fly pollinators. The Huernia genus is in the Apocynaceae family and was named after Justus van Heurne a Dutch missionary, botanist, and doctor.
